A mini comic I did the art for, produced for Grayhaven Comics’ upcoming compilation, ‘You Are Not Alone.’ Written by saint-roku-university, this standalone comic also serves as a slice of backstory for Jane Fitzpatrick — one of the primary characters of the Avatar: tLA/LoK fanproject, ‘What I Learned at SRU.’ Jane’s character concept was directly based on ‘Smellerbee,’ and in the story Jane serves as a reimagining of the character.

You Are Not Alone will be: “A 200+ page anthology of hope with tales of overcoming bullying, homophobia, racism, depression and abuse.” You can find more information about it here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1429812861/you-are-not-alone-1

When this compilation is printed and produced later this year, it will be distributed for free to various students in elementary and high school, so I had to try thinking of how to tell a shorter, self-contained story for a younger audience than I generally write for.

It’s an honor to be part of a project with such a good purpose, and also an honor to work with Avian here in portaying a younger Jane Fitzpatrick, as the artist has consistently done the character justice whenever she has portrayed her.

This project helped me start thinking a lot about the kinds of stories I’d like to tell in a graphic novel/comic format, and as this year goes on and I finish SRU, I’d like to start more earnestly looking into writing for this medium.

Thanks so much to Avian for the hard work she put into this. It’s been a pleasure to collaborate with her, and I hope this piece makes for a worthwhile contribution to the ‘You Are Not Alone’ project.

Today was my birthday. I went to school all day, worked and finally I was able to hang out with Hannah. It was the best because she baked me a cake. It was delicious and sweet. That’s the first time anyone has baked me a cake. Thank you.
